St. Roch is known as a powerful patron against plague, epidemics, and contagious disease, a devotion that spread quickly after he was credited with healing the sick during a plague in Italy through prayer and the sign of the cross. He is also invoked as patron of surgeons, invalids, pilgrims, bachelors, and dogs, the latter tied to the faithful hound who cared for him after he himself contracted the plague and was left to suffer alone in the woods. His feast day is celebrated on August 16, and to this day the faithful turn to him with confidence, trusting in his powerful intercession for protection from illness and disease.
